Think of: urban ministry, joint ventures, advocate funding
Purpose of agency - Develops urban policy/evaluate the progress and effectiveness of urban ministries and make recommended changes/allocate funds and other resources in order to develop and strengthen urban ministry.
Responsibilities & Duties - Coordinate urban ministry work and interest/ raise new funds and allocate existing funds and other resources for urban ministry/establish ventures and partnerships to tackle urban problems/ identify urban churches, in consultation with the district superintendents, that are beginning to decline or may do so in the near future. With the district superintendent, congregation, and other staff, as appropriate to design a plan to redevelop the congregation. There are other duties too detailed to mention.

Purpose of agency: Enable district and local congregation leaders, both laity and clergy, through resources, ministry opportunities for training and programming, and ongoing support as together we strive to make disciple of Jesus Christ.
Typical meeting date and number of meetings per year: Meets 3rd Monday in February at 10:00am at Flushing UMC and the Wednesday before the start of Annual Conference at 6:00pm, and the 3rd Monday in September at 10:00am at Adrian College.

Purpose of agency - Enable district and local congregation leaders, both laity and clergy, through resources, ministry opportunities for training and programming, and ongoing support as together we strive to make disciple of Jesus Christ.
Brief summary of responsibilities & duties - Resourcing Pastors, Christian Educators and volunteers through the website, Facebook and other social media, and consulting ministries. Provide events for all persons who work with Christian Education for training, resourcing, networking, and spiritual renewal.
Typical meeting date and number of meetings per year: The Board of Christian Education typically meets on the Third Saturday of January, March, and September.

Purpose of agency - To promote interest in and work with ecumenical groups within the annual conference and cooperate with the program of the General Commission on Christian Unity and Interreligious Concerns.
Brief summary of responsibilities & duties - Relate to ecumenical groups within the state; Interpret, advocate, and work for the unity of the Christian church; Assist the conference in developing ecumenical relationships; Promote and interpret the work of national and world ecumenical bodies; Fulfill other functions assigned by the annual conference and the 2008 Discipline.
Typical meeting date and number of meetings per year: The Commission meets twice a year – in May and October – on a Saturday morning from 10:00 am until noon.
Meeting location: Usually the Commission has met at Flint: Bethel UMC. In October 2011 they Commission met at Birmingham: First UMC.

Purpose of agency - To relate the gospel of Jesus Christ to the members of the church and to the persons and structures of the communities and world which they live; Show the members of the church and of the society that the reconciliation which God effected through Christ involves personal, social, and civic righteousness
Brief summary of responsibilities & duties - We serve as a connection between the congregations and districts and the General Board of Church and society. We sponsor programs that promote social justice and holiness as a part of the message of the Gospel (i.e. Keep Making Peace). We support ongoing ministries that advocate and work for social justice and societal transformation such as Justice For Our Neighbors and The Detroit Renaissance Peace Center. We administer both the Peace with Justice Sunday Offering Fund and a portion of the Human Relations Day Offering Fund for grants to support programs that advocate for the same. We communicate and advocate to the church and the world, the social principles of the United Methodist Church to elected leaders and officials.
Typical meeting date and number of meetings per year: Meets 3 times per year 1 face to face in September, 2 online meetings in January and March. Usually the 3rd Saturday of those months.

Purpose of agency - The purpose of the Commission on Communications is to be a service and linking agency to meet the communication, publication, multimedia, public and media relations, interpretation and promotional needs of the annual conference. It shall acts as a resource to and have a consultative relationship with the local church, district, conference agencies, and conference staff. (Structure, ¶4)
Brief summary of responsibilities & duties - The vision of the Detroit Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church is to create and nurture dynamic and fruitful congregations who make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. The Communications Commission participates and aligns with this vision in many ways: 1) by telling the story of United Methodist disciples throughout Michigan and around the world, which encourages, equips, and inspires others to become disciples; 2) by utilizing technology to connect disciples with other disciples, and to connect those outside the church with those on the discipleship journey; and 3) by serving as the linking agency between the Conference and the General Church and/or Local Church.
Typical meeting date and number of meetings per year: The Communications Commission meets four to six times per year, usually on the third Tuesday of the month, every other month (summer’s excepted).
Meeting location: Normal meetings are held via conference call and last 60-90 minutes.

Purpose of agency: The mission of the Conference Commission on Young Adult Communities is to encourage and uplift the diverse group of young adults within our conference to grow spiritually through forming real relationships with the church and each other.
Brief summary of responsibilities & duties: Networking young adults throughout the conference and providing trainings for local churches and districts looking to start a young adult ministry.
Typical meeting date and number of meetings per year: Mid-August retreat, first Saturday of November, last Saturday of February, and the night before annual conference (meeting dates fluctuate based on the availability of commission members and are not set in stone)

Purpose of agency - To act on behalf of the annual conference between sessions to implement the conference vision.
Brief summary of responsibilities & duties - Affirm the strategies of the DAC, be the policy-setting and decision-making body for the conference, coordinate and support the work of the agencies, convene an annual Visioning Conference.
Typical meeting date and number of meetings per year - Meets at least five times a year, usually on Saturdays and in a Flint-area UMC. Additionally, members are expected to attend the CLT-sponsored Leadership Day in August.

Purpose of agency: Be aware of and advocate for, the role of persons with disabilities in ministry including ordained and diaconal ministries and local church and annual conference leadership positions; and advocate for and help develop programs within the annual conference which meet the needs of persons with disabilities.

Purpose of agency - The Committee provides support and counsel to the Bishop and interprets the Episcopal office to members of the annual conference.
Brief summary of responsibilities & duties - The Committee includes members of both the Detroit and the West Michigan conferences. It meets with the Bishop and his Clergy Assistant.
Typical meeting date and number of meetings per year: The meetings are scheduled with the Bishop’s calendar in mind and are in the afternoon. Typically we meet four times a year.
Meeting location: We meet at the Bishop’s Office in Okemos.

Purpose of agency - Present to each annual conference session an Adjusted Equitable Base Compensation Schedule for the ensuing year and ensure that no local pastor under Episcopal appointment is below equitable salary schedule. Provide additional salary beyond the equitable salary schedule to enable a pastor with special skills to serve where needed. Review and evaluate each year the justification for continuing support.

Purpose of agency - Oversees the financial and administrative welfare of the conference; Within the work of this council is provision for the development and implementation of the conference moving policies for appointed clergy.
Brief summary of responsibilities & duties - Study the needs of all annual conference agencies to be included in the budget of the annual conference, present to the annual conference a budget, determine and recommend to the annual conference the appropriate formulas and processes to be used within the conference, provide equitable support for district superintendents and other conference staff, develop and implement moving policies to be used in the appointive process

Purpose of agency - Seek to express the total mission of the church in the context of a global setting.
Brief summary of responsibilities & duties - To cooperate with the General Board of Global Ministries in carrying out the policies and promoting all phases of the work as related to the scope of the board as set forth in the 2008 Discipline, paragraph 633. The board works with other agencies in the conference for the purpose of promoting and understanding the missional purpose of the church.
Typical meeting date and number of meetings per year - The Saturday on/after the 15th of January and September of each year. If needed there will be a March meeting. All meetings begin at 9:00 a.m.

Purpose of agency: Supervises and supports a young adult leadership development program, Mission Intern Program.
Brief summary of responsibilities & duties: Committee members are expected to give their input, help visit the various mission intern sites, vote to hire the different interns and discern the best way to help these young people grow as spiritual leaders.
Typical meeting date and number of meetings per year: 4-5 times during the year, mainly via conference call.
Meeting location: Conference call or Warren First UMC in Warren, Mich.
Think of: memoirs, editing, interviewing
Purpose of agency - Collect memoir information for the Journal when the death occurs of clergy, diaconal ministers, lay members of the previous annual conference, lay persons of the conference support staff and ministry team, dependent children of clergy members, missionaries related to the conference and others recommended by the Committee on Memoirs. This is accomplished by contacting family members through the use of the death notices published by the Detroit Annual Conference.
Brief summary of responsibilities & duties - Contact family members for information and pictures for the Journal and also to be used for the Memorial Service. Families provide statements to be read during the service. If the family does not provide this, the committee uses the obituary and may contact their local church to prepare a statement. Families are invited to attend the Memorial Service. Committee members greet them in the chapel prior to the service.

Think of: new church starts, revitalizing, visionaries
Purpose of agency - To collaborate with the Cabinet Representative, the Conference Director of New Faith Communities and Congregational Development, the Conference Staff, the Director of Connectional Ministries, and the Conference Leadership Team to start new congregations and to promote, encourage and resource healthy congregations in new ministries. To lead in further development and implementation of an approved Comprehensive Plan for starting new congregations and revitalizing existing churches. Par 633.5e, The United Methodist Book of Discipline, 2008. (As established by action of the Detroit Annual Conference, May 2011)
Brief summary of responsibilities & duties - Communicate the vision of new church development to the annual conference; In cooperation with the District Superintendents and Full Cabinet, work with district task groups, partner churches and/or district boards of church location for starting new congregations or expanding vital existing congregations; Administer funds designated for new churches and intentionally selected revitalizing churches in accordance with decisions of appropriate conference entities; Work with the Cabinet and appropriate conference agencies to identify locations for the development of cooperative ministries as defined in the Book of Discipline – 2009, Par 206; Assist and equip new church pastors and pastors of selected revitalizing churches in developing and maintaining a covenant support network; Maintain a program of continuing education and participate in connectional leadership training events in the congregational development field; In collaboration with the assigned conference staff person, provide guidance to local churches as they progress through the process for intentional revitalization.

Purpose of agency: Prepare and present to the annual conference the slate of nominees given consideration to one-third clergypersons, one-third laymen, one-third laywomen, and ethnic balance for the various organizational units, as outlined on the table of contents pages of the structure.
Brief summary of responsibilities & duties: Prepare and present a slate of nominees to the annual conference for election; Shall be empowered to fill vacancies, unless otherwise provided for by the Discipline , occurring between sessions of the annual conference.
Typical meeting date and number of meetings per year: Meets 6 times per year, usually the 3rd Friday of the month at 9:00am. Also meets once during the weekend at Annual Conference.

Purpose of agency - Have charge of the interests and work of providing for and contributing to the support, relief, assistance, and pensioning of clergy and their families; other church workers and lay employees of The United Methodist Church; its institutions, organizations, and agencies within the annual conference, except as otherwise provided for by the General Board of Pension and Health Benefits; Make recommendations to the annual conference regarding the development, promotion, and review of a broad general program of insurance protection
Brief summary of responsibilities & duties - Retirement & Welfare Plans: Provide retirement benefits for all eligible clergy members of the Detroit Annual Conference including pensions, disabilities, and death benefits. Eligible lay employees of the annual conference are also enrolled in retirement and welfare plans while actively employed; Health Insurance: Provide a comprehensive health care for all eligible active, disabled and retired clergy members and lay employees of the Detroit Annual Conference, Evaluate continually to maintain a sustainable balance between benefits and cost for all involved parties.

Purpose of agency - provide for an adequate program and support staff to carry out the purposes, goals, and responsibilities of the Conference Leadership Team
Responsibilities & Duties - consult with the Director of Connectional Ministries on the hiring, evaluation, support, and termination of program director staff. It will consult with the cabinet as needed. Give oversight to the hiring, evaluation, and termination of program support staff. Participate in the Conference Support Staff Policy Committee in the development of guidelines for Conference Support Staff.
Typical Meeting Date - meet as often as necessary, not less than twice a year. Meet at least 4 times a year with each of the program directors and support staff members. Meetings are held on Tuesdays ordinarily in September, January, November, & April

Purpose of agency: The purpose of the Commission and Race is to challenge boards, agencies, institutions and connectional structures to provide full and equal participation of all ethnic constituencies in the total life and mission of the Conference. The mission is carried out through advocacy and educational resourcing and by observing practices of the entire conference to ensure racial/ethnic inclusiveness.
Brief summary of responsibilities & duties: We are mission driven: (a) We believe that each person is a child of God and that God's love and grace are extended to all. (b) We advocate public policies where religion and race are issues. (c) We are concerned with the whole person--ethnicity, creed, color, ancestry, national origin, gender, age and religion.
Typical meeting date and number of meetings per year: We meet every other month, 3rd Saturday at 10:00 a.m. (6 times per year).

Think of: conference property, directors of corporation, flexible thinkers
Purpose of agency - Provide for the needs of the staff of annual conference for housing. Receive and safeguard gifts made to the annual conference.
Brief summary of responsibilities & duties - The Trustees are responsible for all conference parsonages and for the conference center in Flint. Normally, if there are repairs to be made, we arrange for them to be made. When it is time to purchase or sell one of these parsonages, it is our responsibility to handle all arrangements. We are also responsible for investments of the Annual Conference. These are handled through the Treasurer’s Office. We meet once a year with the insurance carrier for our property for a Loss Report.
